Pakistani Friends Discuss How Technology Impacts Their Muslim Lives

Setting: A Karachi tea stall, two friends, Zara and Aisha, catch up over steaming cups of chai.

Zara: (Sipping her chai) Wah, Aisha! You look fantastic! New scarf?

Aisha: (Smiling) Shukran, Zara! Just a little something. But enough about me, tell me about yours. How's that new job treating you?

Zara: Alhamdulillah, it's going well. It's a lot to learn, but having my phone with all these educational apps is a lifesaver. I can download courses and listen to lectures on my commute.

Aisha: Mashallah! Technology is a blessing sometimes. Remember when we had to lug around those heavy textbooks?

Zara: Don't even remind me! Speaking of blessings, have you seen those new Islamic apps? There's one that even has the Quran with different translations and recitations.

Aisha: You know it! Makes memorizing Surahs so much easier. Plus, I can listen to lectures by my favorite scholars whenever I want. It's amazing how accessible Islamic knowledge has become.

Zara: Absolutely! And it's not just learning. My ammi uses an app to find prayer times depending on our location. No more scrambling to find a calendar.

Aisha: (Laughs) My ammi too! Though sometimes she still asks me to double-check, just in case the app is wrong.

Zara: (Chuckles) Can't blame her! But technology is great for staying connected too. Remember how expensive it was to call Abu in Dubai before?

Aisha: Don't even get me started! Now, with video calls, it feels like he's right here. We can even see the kids playing.

Zara: Exactly! Though sometimes I do worry about the kids spending too much time on their phones. All those games and social media...

Aisha: Subhanallah, you're right. We have to be careful. But there are good sides too. My niece learned a new language through an app!

Zara: That's true. It's all about balance, I guess. Like anything else, technology can be a tool for good or bad.

Aisha: Exactly! We just have to use it wisely, following Islamic principles, of course.

Zara: (Raises her cup) To using technology for good!

Aisha: (Clinks her cup) To that! And another round of chai?

Zara: (Smiling) Absolutely!
